Coating

(1) An unbroken, clear film applied to a printed substrate  in layers to protect or seal it, or to make it glossy.

(2) Applying waxes, adhesives, varnishes, or other protective or sealable chemicals to a substrate during the converting process.

(3) The mineral substances (clay, blanc fixe, satin white, etc.) applied to the surface of the substrate.
